Why licensing matters more than price
Unlicensed plumbing is one of the most expensive ways to save money in Brisbane. If a non-licensed person installs your hot water system and it floods the house, your insurer can decline the claim outright — the policy almost always requires work to be carried out by a licensed tradesperson. Same story when you sell: a conveyancer who finds unpermitted drainage or gas work will hold up settlement until it's rectified and certified.
Queensland is stricter than most states. Water, sanitary drainage, backflow prevention and all gas work are licensed activities under the QBCC and the Plumbing and Drainage Act. Notifiable work must also be lodged with council. Getting it right the first time costs less than paying twice.

Then search it on the QBCC online register. Confirm the name matches the business invoicing you and that the licence class covers the work — plumbing and gas fitting are separate classes.

Ask for the certificate of currency. It should be current and cover property damage.

Get the quote in writing
It should list labour, materials, the call-out fee and whether that fee is waived if you proceed with the repair.

Workmanship warranty and product warranty are different things. Get both in writing.

Check the compliance paperwork
Gas work needs a Form 4 gas compliance certificate. Notifiable plumbing work needs a Form 4/Form 9 lodged with council. No certificate means the job isn't finished.

How do I check a plumber's licence in Queensland?
Every plumber and gas fitter working in Queensland must hold a current QBCC licence. You can search the licensee's name or licence number free on the QBCC website in about 30 seconds. If a tradesperson can't give you a licence number, walk away — unlicensed plumbing work is illegal in Queensland and it voids most home insurance policies.
What's the difference between a licensed plumber and a licensed gas fitter?
They're separate QBCC licence classes. A plumber can work on water and drainage; a gas fitter can work on gas lines and appliances. Plenty of trades hold one and not the other. We hold both, so a single visit covers a leaking pipe and a faulty gas cooktop connection.
Do I get paperwork after the job?
Yes. You receive a tax invoice itemising labour, materials and any call-out fee. Notifiable plumbing work is lodged with the relevant council, and gas work is issued with a Form 4 gas compliance certificate. Keep both — insurers and conveyancers ask for them.
Are you insured, and what does that cover?

What does the 12-month workmanship warranty include?

How do I avoid being overcharged?
Get the price in writing before work starts, ask whether the call-out fee is waived on repair, and confirm whether the quote covers materials. We quote the whole job up-front rather than running an open hourly meter, so the number you approve is the number on the invoice.
