What to do in the first five minutes

Most of the damage from a plumbing emergency happens before the plumber arrives. Water travels fast through Brisbane's timber floors and gyprock walls, and a burst 20 mm line can push more than 30 litres a minute into a cavity you can't see. The steps below cut the damage bill dramatically.

    1. 1

      Shut off the mains

The isolation tap sits next to your water meter at the front boundary. Turn it clockwise until it stops. If it's seized, call Urban Utilities on 13 26 57 and they'll shut it at the street.

    2. 2

Kill the power to wet areas

If water is anywhere near power points, downlights or an electric hot water unit, switch those circuits off at the switchboard before you walk through it.

    3. 3

      Drain the system

Open every cold tap and flush the toilets. That bleeds residual pressure out through the sinks instead of through the break.

    4. 4

      Smell gas? Get out first

Do not flick switches, use the phone indoors or light anything. Open doors and windows, evacuate, then ring 13 19 09 from outside.

    5. 5

      Contain and photograph

Towels, buckets and a mop limit the spread. Take photos before you clean up — your insurer will want them.

    Emergency plumber Brisbane — FAQ

How quickly can an emergency plumber get to my Brisbane home?

For southside suburbs within about 20 minutes of our Shailer Park base — Springwood, Loganholme, Rochedale, Underwood, Daisy Hill — we're typically on-site within 45 to 60 minutes. Greater Brisbane call-outs are usually 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic and time of day. When you call we give you an honest arrival window, not a vague 'sometime today'.

What counts as a genuine plumbing emergency?

A burst pipe or uncontrolled leak, a gas leak or gas smell, sewage backing up into the house, no water at all, a blocked toilet in a home with only one toilet, a hot water system leaking heavily, or storm water flooding under the house. If water or gas is escaping and you can't stop it, that's an emergency.

What does an emergency plumber cost in Brisbane in 2026?

Expect a call-out fee in the $99 to $180 range depending on the hour, plus labour. Most after-hours emergency jobs land between $250 and $850 all-up. Burst pipe repairs and emergency hot water replacements can run higher. We quote the job before we start, so you approve the price before any spanner turns.

Do you charge extra for nights, weekends and public holidays?

There is an after-hours rate, and we tell you what it is on the phone before we dispatch. There are no surprise surcharges added at the end of the job.

What should I do while I wait for the plumber?

Shut off the water at the mains near your meter, switch off power to any wet areas at the switchboard, and open cold taps to drain residual pressure. If you smell gas, do not touch switches — open windows, get everyone outside and call the gas emergency line on 13 19 09.

Do you handle both plumbing and gas emergencies?

Yes. We hold QBCC plumbing and gas fitting licences, so one van handles burst pipes, blocked sewers, hot water failures and gas leaks. You don't need to call two trades.
