How to Prepare Your Plumbing for Brisbane Storm Season
Every year between November and March, Brisbane faces severe thunderstorms, heavy downpours, and the threat of flooding. Your home's plumbing system is your first line of defence against water damage. Here's how to prepare.
Clear Your Stormwater Drains
Before storm season hits, inspect all stormwater grates and drains around your property. Remove leaves, dirt, and debris that can cause water to back up. Pay special attention to drains near garden beds where mulch and soil wash into grates during heavy rain.
Check Your Gutters and Downpipes
Blocked gutters cause water to overflow and pool around your foundation. Clean gutters at least twice during storm season and ensure downpipes are securely connected to stormwater drains. If you notice rust or cracks, get them repaired before the storms arrive.
Inspect Your Sewer Line

Know Where Your Main Shut-Off Is
Every Brisbane homeowner should know the location of their main water shut-off valve. In an emergency — such as a burst pipe during a storm — turning off the mains quickly prevents extensive water damage. It's usually located near your water meter at the front of your property.
Post-Storm Checklist
After severe weather, check for leaks around taps, toilets, and under sinks. Look for damp patches on walls or ceilings. If your property was inundated, have a licensed plumber inspect your sewer and water lines for damage before using them.
