Washing Machine Plumbing: Getting the Install Right

    17 April 2026 4 min read

New washing machine arrived and won't connect? Nine times out of ten it's one of these small compliance issues.

    Cold-Only vs Dual Inlet

Modern front-loaders are almost all cold-only. Older top-loaders need both. Check the back of the machine — if there's only one inlet, cap the hot tap to avoid a hot hose flooding the laundry.

    Standpipe Height

Queensland standard is 600–1000mm for the drain standpipe. Too short and the machine siphons; too tall and the pump can't lift the water.

    Hose Length & Bracing

Manufacturer hoses are 1.2m — don't extend them. Every extra join is a leak point.

    Flood Prevention

Braided hoses fail after ~10 years. Replace them proactively, and turn taps off between washes if you're going away.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Can I DIY the install?

You can slide the machine in and connect hoses to existing taps. Anything that involves cutting or extending pipe needs a licensed plumber under Queensland law.
