Tempering Valves: The $200 Part That Prevents Scalding

    14 April 2026 5 min read

If your Brisbane home was built or renovated after 1998, there's a small brass valve on your hot water system that's the difference between a warm shower and a third-degree burn.

    Why They're Legally Required

Hot water stores at 60°C+ to kill Legionella bacteria. That temperature causes full-thickness burns in under 1 second on a child's skin. Tempering valves blend cold water into the hot line to deliver 50°C max at bathroom outlets.

    Signs Yours Has Failed

Lukewarm showers even at full hot, or scalding water at bathroom taps. Both indicate the valve needs replacement — it's a 30-minute job.

    Lifespan

Most tempering valves are rated for 5 years in Brisbane's hard water. Reece and Rheem both recommend replacement at that interval, not repair.

    Cost

$220–$320 supplied and fitted for a standard AS4032.3 compliant valve on an existing hot water system.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does the kitchen tap have one?

No — kitchen and laundry are exempt in Queensland because you need hot water for washing dishes and sanitising.
